Crime Prevention
There is no greater responsibility for a government than to ensure the protection of its citizens' rights to safety and security. To ensure a Canada that is safe for families and communities, the government has made tackling crime one of its five key priorities. Tackling crime involves effective enforcement, sentencing and corrections, and also means intervening to prevent crime before it happens. So effective crime prevention is an integral part of the Government of Canada's action plan to tackle crime.
Funds available for crime prevention support focused action on specific priorities including:
- Addressing early risk factors among vulnerable families and children;
- Addressing risk factors among youth at-risk;
- Issues such as youth gangs and drug related crimes affecting local communities;
- Re-offending among high risk groups; and
- Prevention in Aboriginal communities.
Crime prevention activities are done in close partnership with the provinces and territories, police organizations and municipalities in order to respond to local issues. These activities will help families and local communities steer vulnerable youth away from lives of drugs and crime.
